Jonathan Edwards (October 5, – Ma ) was a revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist Protestant theologian. Like most of the Puritans, he held to the Reformed colonial followers later distinguished themselves from other Congregationalists as "New Lights" (endorsing the Great Awakening), as opposed to "Old Lights" (non-revivalists).   Samuel Buell (–), the central figure in the letter, is one of the least understood, but perhaps most influential figures of New England’s era of great awakenings. Born in Coventry, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale College and was licensed to preach by the East Fairfield ministerial association in

hundred miles. At Newbury, Essex county, Massachusetts, the earth opened in several places. The public mind was greatly alarmed, with the apprehension that the day of nature’s final dissolution had come. In , a fatal epidemic, known by the name of the throat distemper, raged in many parts of New England.   Jonathan Edwards (October 5, – Ma ) was a preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans. Edwards "is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian,"[3] and one of America's greatest intellectuals.[4].
